WEEK 21 RESULTS: SUPER BOWL XXV

21 Kansas City 24 vs. San Francisco 31
On a balmy day in January two teams emerged from the stadium tunnels to wage a battle for the Lombardi trophy. Kansas City dominated its schedule and won a hard fought game against the Steelers to represent the AFC. San Fransico held off a tough Dallas squad to win the NFC.

On the opening play Joe Montana hit Jerry Rice for a 31 yard gain. Joe manuevered his club down the field and with a penalty had a 4th and 10 on the Chiefs 32 yard line. Steve Young came in and hit a clutch 11 yard pass to Sherrard to keep the drive alive. Later Montana initiated the scoring with a crisp 6 yard pass to Dexter Carter. Steve Deberg, not to be outdoine mounted his own drive, but a 7 yard loss on a sack by Fagan had them trying a 53 yard FG by their All-Pro Nick Lowery - long enough but wide. QB Montana again hit the gas pedal and after a Dexter Carter 42 yard scamper, hit Brent Jones for an 11 yard score. SF 14 - KC - 0. Deberg was not daunted and a short flare pass to Todd McNair ended up 57 yards later inside the 49ers red zone. From 1 yard out Barry Word crashed through the line for the Chiefs first score. In the second quarter both teams trade FG and the score at halftime was SF 17 KC 10.

Like two heavyweight fighters these teams were poised for a slugout in the 2nd half. This of course resulted in each team punting on their next possession. Steve Deberg was the leading passer in the league this year and decided to show the fans why. He hit 5 different receivers and led the Chiefs again to the 1 yard line where Barry Word knew what to do - a TD run. SF 17 - KC 17. The 49ers fought back driving to the KC 26 where Steve Young failed by inches to get a first down, ball over on downs to the Chiefs. A sack by Matt Millen resulted in a stalled drive and punt for the Chiefs. Three plays later Montana hit Rice in stride to produce a 38 yard scoring toss. SF up 24 - 17. Deberg again tried the short passing game but a penalty and two sacks by Charles Haley resulted in the Chiefs being inside their own 10, so a punt ensued. Montana then spread the ball around with passes to Rathman, Rice and a final 5 yard scoring pass to Dexter Carter. SF went on top 31 - 17. KC fans were getting desparate but the Chiefs didn't let up. They drove the ball and on a 4th down and 10 yards to go, little JJ Birden hauled in a 24 yard gain to keep the drive alive. Then with 1:48 remianing in the game he caught another pass, this time for 7 yards and a TD to bring the Chiefs within 7 points. The 49ers ran the ball three straight times making the Chiefs use their timeouts. With the ball on their 20 yard line, Deberg hit 5 of 6 passes but couldn't get past the SF 35 yard line when the clock expired. Final score SF 31 and KC 24.

Joe Montana was the game MVP completing 23 of 24 passes for 306 yards and 4 TD's. Deberg was 29 of 45 for 384 yards and one TD. There were no turnovers in the game. Mega Kudos to Mark Hetterich for a superb season and great Superbowl game.
