OUTSTANDING GAMES: None WEEK 20: SUPER BOWL XVIII at Tampa Stdm, Tampa FL 20 Dallas 20 vs Miami 9 The Dallas Cowboys finally redeemed themselves after their crushing collapse in SBXIV with a 20-9 win over the Dophins in Super Bowl XVIII. Twenty-three Cowboys remain on the roster from Super Bowl XIV and all still feel the pain from their nightmare collapse four years earlier. Dallas had blown a 21-9 lead with under two minutes left that threw them into a tailspin the last three years. The Cowboys lost in the first round to Detroit in 1980 and had two heart-breaking losses to San Francisco in 1981 and 1982. The Cowboys blew a 14 point lead in 1981 and lost in overtime in 1982 in a wild shootout, 44-38. This time the Dallas defense and special teams rose to the occasion. Much maligned all year having allowed 321 points (second most for a SB champ) the Cowboys shut down young rookie phenom Dan Marino who appeared to be suffering who rookie jitters. Marino completed only 13-35 for 210 yards and no TDs. Everson Walls limited Duper to only 2 catches for 34 yards. It was not a good day for QBs in general as Danny White also had his worst performance of the year. White completed 16-36 for 157 yards 1 TD and 3 costly interceptions. The bright spot on offense was Tony Dorsett who earned game MVP honors with 122 yards on 24 carries and scored 1 TD. After holding Miami to three and out on their first possession, the Cowboys threatened driving to the Miami 31 before Danny White threw the first of his three interceptions. Marino then drove the Dolphins into Cowboy territory with a 22 yard pass to Nate Moore plus a 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty added on. A 20 yard pass to Joe Rose put the Dolphins into field goal range where their drive stalled. Uwe Von Shamann kicked a 40 yarder and the Dolphins led 3-0. Rod Hill returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield and Dallas drove 50 yards in 7 plays capped by a 19 yard pass from White to Hill to give Dallas a 7-3 lead. Dallas increased their lead to 10-3 on their next possession when Rafael Septien booted a 48 yarder. Dallas struggled in the second quarter and Miami took advantage of good field position. A 24 yard pass from Marino to Duper gave the Dophins the ball inside the Cowboy thirty where Uwe Von Shamann who had missed earlier in the quarter from 41 yards, connected from 43 to cut the lead to 10-6. Danny White's third interception of the day at the start of the third quarter led to Von Shamanns' third field goal, and the Cowboy lead was down to 1. Momentum had clearly shifted in the Dolphin's direction. However, Tony Dorsett picked up thirty-five yard rushing on the Cowboy's next possession as the Dolphins expected the Cowboys to pass. A holding penalty stalled their at the 32. Septien's 49 yard attempt had just enough leg to give the Cowboys some breathing room at 13-9. Marino appeared to rally his troops connecting on 4 of 7 passes for 50 yards on their next drive but Von Shamann's 26 yarder was wide right and the Cowboys dodged a bullet. After forcing the Cowboys to punt on their next possession, Marino fumbled the handoff and the Cowboys recovered at the Dolphin 29. Ron Springs ripped off a 19 yard gain on the next play down to the Miami 10. On second and ten, White hit Cosbie at the goal line but he came back for the ball and was hit immediately and the ball was spotted at the 1. On 3rd and 1 Dorsett crashed over for the score, putting Dallas in front 20-9 with 8 minutes left. Dallas shut down Marino on their next possession and the Cowboys ran out the clock for a 20-9 win. After the game several long-time Cowboys announced their retirements. Drew Pearson, Harvey Martin, Robert Newhouse, Billy Joe DuPree, and Pat Donovan. Newhouse, Pearson, Martin and DuPree had been with the team since 1973 and played on 4 SB teams. This may have been the Cowboy's last hurrah and rumors are circulating about Landry's possible retirement. Cowboy brass hope to keep the Cowboy's only coach back for one more year.
