SUPER BOWL I: Lake Huron Claims Title

18 Lake Huron 17 vs. Elgin  7 @ Orange Bowl, Miami FL
It was a balmy 76° in Miami as the Elgin Watchmen met the Lake Huron Iroquois in the inaugural Super Bowl for the OTFL. Both teams came into the game with high hopes and well-earned confidence.

The opening kickoff saw the Watchmen drive down to their own 44 before having to punt the ball away. A sack by Alex Karras was the key to stopping that drive. It was 3 and out for the Iroquois as they couldn't make the Watchmen budge an inch. Elgin was the top rated defense in the league this season. Elgin again started marching down the field with Lennie Dawson hitting several sharp passes to Otis Taylor and Ron Sellers. The last one being a crisp slant pass to Taylor for a 21 yard score. Lake Huron got the message that the Watchmen were for real and started their own drive. A long hitch from Virgil Carter to Gene Washington got the Iroquois off the schnide as they proceeded to drive the ball to the Watchmen 17 before settling for a Bruce Gossett 24 yard field goal.

Now in the second quarter both teams still struggled to get some offense generated. Then with 9 minutes left in the half, Charley Harraway found a gap opened by Ed Budde and rumbled 31 yards to the 44 yard line. Carter hit a couple passes and with the ball on the Watchmen's 33 yard line they went for it on 4th down only to have Carter lose three on a great play by Chuck Howley. Was the momentum going to change? Duane Thomas and Harmon Wages blasted into the line on several carries but a short pass from Dawson was picked off by W.K. Hicks with a great play. This placed the Iroquois in a good position to get some points. But a subsequent field goal attempt by Gossett from the 20 yard line went wide right. The Iroquois faithful started to wonder if this was their day? Halftime score Watchmen 7 - Iroquois 3.

Lake Huron received the second half kick and the halftime speech must have worked as they mounted a determined drive that was capped by a Namath to Shanklin 13 yard TD pass. The pass was threaded between CB Bob Jeter and Safety Paul Krause. Shanklin fell to the ground and was mobbed by his teammates. Of course Broadway Joe sauntered off the field waving his #1 sign in the air. QB Len Dawson saw it was time to make a statement and hit Ron Sellers for 12 quick yards. But on the next attempt surly Tim Rossovich broke through the protection and tripped Dawson for a 5 yard loss. Tension was building and the resulting play was another grand one for safety W.K. Hicks. The alum from tiny Texas Southern University was to have the game of a lifetime today. He tipped and then intercepted the next pass bobbing and weaving his for a a 41 yard return to the Watchmen's 25 yard line. Virgil Carter connected twice with TE Bob Tucker the last being a 16 yard scoring toss. Elgin now saw the game changing and determined to score this time. They mixed their runs and passes effectively with Duane Thomas making several key gains. This drive ran out of gas at the Iroquois 16 yard line so Coach Hasleiet decided to kick the field goal. Pete Gogolak was one of the leading kickers this season. He lined up and squarely pushed the ball wide left!

In the 4th qtr. Joe Namath came back into the huddle and told the lineman to earn their pay. The Iroquois passed the ball efficiently placing the ball down to the 9 yard line of the Watchmen. At that point a super hit by Alan Page knocked the ball out of Donny Anderson's hands and the Elgin squad had new life. Dawson quickly tried to matriculate down the field but at the 47 yard line Roger Wehrli jumped a route by Taylor and intercepted the pass. Elgin was to get the ball back three more times but never could get the ball to the end zone. With 1:45 left on the clock Hicks got his third INT of the day stopping the Elgin squad.

MVP of the game was W.K. Hicks who led the defense in holding the Watchmen to 277 total yards versus 368 for the Iroquois. Congrats to Coach Brian Hasleiet for a terrifc season (13 - 1).

INTERESTED OWNERS PLEASE READ!

Currently, we are searching for 24 owners for the OTFBA league.  Please review the TEAMS page to see if there are any Open Teams and e-mail me (cweyenberg@comcast.net) if you are interested in joining or being added to our waiting list. We do have annual league dues which will be $15.00 and a league payout system.  This will be an off-season, head to head football league.  We will plan on starting the draft in late Jan. (maybe early Feb?) and all owners must own a copy of the Action PC for Windows software..Action 2008 .  This league will all but require its members to play Head to Head over the internet, so do not join if you do not think you can fill this commitment
