1981 American League Championship Series

1981: ALCS (3-2) California Angels  defeat New York Yankees

Angels won first game- a 13 inning overtime thriller. Yankees came back under Tommy John to win second. Angels squeaked out a 2-1 win in 3rd game to take a 2- 1 lead. In Game 4, Angels took a 3-2 lead into 8th inning but Yanks scored to tie it up, and would ultimately win in 11th inning to force Game 5.

In Game 5, Angels led 7-4 going into the 7th, but bullpen surrendered 2 runs in 7th and 1 in 8th to allow Yankees to tie. With 2 out in bottom of 8th, Angels strung together 2 walks and 3 singles off Yanks relievers Ron Davis and George Frazier to take a 3 run lead into the 9th. Yankees would not go quietly, however. Yankees’ Larry Milbourne reached on an error, and after a Jerry Mumphrey fly out, Reggie Jackson singled. Angels brought on receiver Angel Moreno, who promptly walked all 3 batters he faced. With the score 10-8, bases loaded, and one out, Angels reliever Don Aase came on to induce ground outs from Willie Randolph (driving in a run to make score 10-9) and Oscar Gamble to give the Angels the unlikely AL title.

Angels and Cardinals will square off in the World Series.
