The
10.5cm StuH 42 L/28 has relatively compact dimensions, so that the total
weight of the vehicle when loaded increases by only 600 kg compared to the
Sturmgeschütz armed with the long 7.5cm gun. The larger ammunition,
however, reduces the maximum load to 36 projectiles. Despite unfavorable
ballistic performance, its 10.5cm barrel can occasionally play a role as a
tank destroyer. Indeed, its 14 kg Kanone Granate rot Panzer ammunition
(initial velocity of 470 m/s) can pierce 50 mm of armour at 1,500 metres,
at an angle of attack of 30°. In addition, its gun can engage both
fortifications and enemy tanks thanks to its GR 39 H1/A (Granate
Hohlladung) hollow charge shell, with an initial velocity of 495 m/s,
capable of piercing 100 mm of homogeneous armour. However, its effective
range barely exceeds 600 metres. Indeed, as a howitzer, the curved
trajectory of the shots does not facilitate long-range precision.
